How this number is made
Many signing bonuses must be repaid if you leave before a date. A common clause prorates the repayment by the months left. Some clauses demand the entire bonus. This page is the prorated version. Read the offer for which one you signed.
- Months you must stay is the clawback window.
- Months worked cannot exceed that window in a prorated deal. If you stay the whole window, the repayment is zero.
Formula
Repayment = bonus × months remaining ÷ months required.
Worked example
With the figures already in the form, pro-rata repayment is $5,833.33.
Questions
What if the contract wants all of it back?
Then the repayment is the whole bonus whenever you leave early. This page will understate it. The contract wins.
Is the repayment pre-tax?
You may have paid tax on the bonus already. Recovering that tax is a payroll and a return question. This page is the gross repayment.
