Pay

Day Rate

A day rate times the days you will bill.

How this number is made

A day rate times billed days is revenue, not pay. Unbilled days, tax, and expenses are still ahead of you. Two hundred billed days is a full year for many independents, not 260 weekdays.

  1. Count days you will invoice, not days you will work.
  2. The 1099 page turns a similar gross into a net.

Formula

Revenue = day rate × days.

Worked example

With the figures already in the form, billed revenue is $130,000.

Questions

How many days can I bill?

Fewer than the weekdays on a calendar. Holidays, illness, and weeks between contracts are why 200 is a more honest default than 260.

Should the rate include tax?

Quote it however your clients expect. This page does not add VAT. The invoice page does.
