Pay

Shift Differential

Pay for hours that earn a percent premium on top of the base rate.

How this number is made

A shift differential is a percent or a dollar add-on for nights or weekends. This page uses a percent of the base rate for the hours you type. It does not also compute overtime. If those hours are overtime, they may need both premiums, and the order is in the contract.

  1. The differential is a percent of base, not a percent of overtime.
  2. Hours are only the hours that earn the differential.

Formula

Premium pay = base × differential × hours. Total for those hours = base × (1 + differential) × hours.

Worked example

With the figures already in the form, differential pay is $38.40.

Questions

Does this stack with overtime?

Sometimes the overtime rate includes the differential, sometimes it does not. The contract says. This page is the differential alone.

What if the add-on is a flat dollar?

Type the flat dollar as the base for a moment, or add it outside this page. The math here is a percent.
