Original Price

The price before a discount, given the sale price and the percent off.

How this number is made

A sale tag that says the percent off lets you recover the pre-sale price by dividing. This is how you check whether the was-price was real. It cannot prove the item ever sold at that price.

  1. Percent off is the discount, not the percent you pay.
  2. A 100% discount has no original price in this formula.

Formula

Original = sale price ÷ (1 − percent off).

Worked example

With the figures already in the form, price before the discount is $100.00.

Questions

Does this prove the old price?

No. It only reverses the arithmetic on the tag. A fictional was-price reverses into a fictional original.

What about two discounts?

Reverse them one at a time, or use the stacked-discount page forward with a guess.
