Cost of Living Adjustment

A salary scaled between two cost indexes you supply.

How this number is made

A cost-of-living adjustment scales a salary by the ratio of two indexes. If the other place is 118 and yours is 100, the equivalent salary is 18% higher. The indexes are yours to bring. This page does not look up a city, and two indexes from different publishers should not be mixed.

  1. Use the same index family for both numbers.
  2. 100 and 118 mean the other place costs 1.18 times as much, if the index is built that way.

Formula

Equivalent salary = salary × index there ÷ index here.

Worked example

With the figures already in the form, equivalent salary there is $106,200.

Questions

Which index?

Any you trust, used consistently. The page will not fetch one.

Does this include taxes?

No. A place can be cheaper on rent and more expensive after state tax. The index only does what its author put in it.
