How this number is made
The gain on a sale is what you received minus what you paid minus the fees. Tax depends on how long you held it and the rest of your return. The capital-gains page does the tax. This page stops at the pre-tax result.
- Bought-at and sold-at are per share.
- Fees are commissions and any flat charge, once.
Formula
Gain = (sale − purchase) × shares − fees.
Worked example
With the figures already in the form, gain before tax is $360.00.
Questions
What about dividends I received?
They are not part of the sale gain. Count them separately if you want total return.
Is a loss negative?
Yes. A sale below the cost is a negative gain.
What if the price is under a penny?
This page prints prices in cents, so $0.0001 becomes $0.00. Use the penny stock page, which keeps a price that small.
