Card Processing Fee

What a percent plus a fixed fee takes out of a card payment.

How this number is made

Card processors take a percent plus a fixed fee. The customer pays the sticker. You receive the sticker minus the fee, unless you surcharge. The default is a common published pair, not a quote from your processor.

  1. Use the rate on your statement. Debit, rewards cards, and invoices can differ.
  2. The fixed fee is per transaction.

Formula

Fee = amount × percent + fixed fee. You receive = amount − fee.

Worked example

With the figures already in the form, you receive is $82.24.

Questions

Can I pass this to the customer?

Only where the card brand and your state allow a surcharge, and only if you do it the way they require. This page does not add a surcharge.

What about refunds?

Many processors keep the fee on a refund. That loss is not in this one-charge math.
