Rent Increase

What the rent becomes after a percent raise, and a year from now.

How this number is made

A renewal letter is a percent on the current rent. This page turns that percent into dollars per month and per year.

  1. Use the rent in the current lease.
  2. The increase is the landlord’s percent, not inflation, unless they happen to match.

Formula

New rent = current × (1 + increase). Extra per year = the monthly difference × 12.

Worked example

With the figures already in the form, rent after the increase is $1,890.00.

Questions

Is there a legal cap?

Only where a state or city says so. This page does not know your lease or your local rent rule.

Should I compare it with moving?

The extra per year is the number to set next to a moving truck, a deposit, and a new lease’s starting rent.
